Connecting Communities One Computer at a Time, The Hasson Company Celebrates Geek Fair with Nonprofit Free Geek
Date: August 18, 2008
The Hasson Company Green Team will again partner with computer recycling organization, Free Geek, to celebrate Geek Fair on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008 from Noon to 6 p.m.
Dedicated members of The Hasson Green Team recently volunteered at the Free Geek community technology center, disassembling computer processors and floppy disks. Through their volunteer efforts, they earned 24 hours toward one free computer from Free Geek. The Hasson Green Team intends to donate this computer -- which comes with free educational lessons and a year of tech support from Free Geek -- to nonprofit organization, JOIN. So far this year, JOIN has helped more than 220 homeless individuals throughout the Portland area transition into permanent housing. The Hasson Green Team's donation of a computer will help sustain a family as they look for jobs and do schoolwork.
"Volunteering for Free Geek was a wonderful experience," says Audrey Bonnet, a broker with The Hasson Company's Portland West branch. "It was wonderful working as a team to keep used computer equipment out of our landfills by recycling and refurbishing them. I am happy to think that a family will be able to put our donated computer to valuable use."
Since 2000, Free Geek has recycled 1,500 tons of electronic scrap and refurbished more than 15,000 computer systems. Geek Fair is an opportunity for Free Geek to give back to the Portland metropolitan community and promote its mission of recycling computer equipment. Events at Geek Fair will include the equipment-bashing "Smashtacular" event, hard drive shuffleboard, kid's activities, food and drink, and music from local bands such as American Nobody, Hide and Go Hustle, Atole and more.
In May, The Hasson Green Team hosted its first annual recycling drive called "Computers for Communities," teaming up with Free Geek to accept donations of unwanted computer equipment. Donated equipment was refurbished and given to individuals and organizations throughout the local area. Unusable items were deconstructed and recycled following strict guidelines to keep the materials from being dumped in landfills. Green Team agents are dedicated to educating their clients about sustainable building practices and features that reduce a home's carbon footprint.
