The Hasson Company's Green Team Hosted "Computers for Communities" Recycle Day for Unwanted Computer Equipment

Teaming up with Free Geek and Swartz Moving & Storage, The Hasson Company's Green Team hosted its first annual recycling drive for unwanted computer equipment last Saturday, May 31, 2008. During the "Computers for Communities" event, mobile storage units were set up in the parking lots of two of the company's area offices, the Portland East branch and Portland West branch.
Hundreds of people came out to donate their used computer equipment at both locations, contributing everything from monitors and CPUs to mice, keyboards, cords, desktop printers, scanners, speakers and hard drives. More than 522 items were collected at the event, 103 of which were CRT monitors that will now be recycled safely, keeping hazardous materials out of local landfills.
The items collected at The Hasson Company's "Computers for Communities" event include:
- 2 TVs
- 103 CRT monitors
- 103 computers
- 91 keyboards
- 82 printers
- 12 laptops
- 6 fax machines
- 8 DVD players
- 5 LCDs
- 23 scanners
- 87 miscellaneous (includes cables, speakers, drives)
All items were donated to Free Geek, a non-profit organization that has recycled 1,500 tons of electronic scrap and refurbished more than 15,000 computer systems since 2000. Donated equipment will be refurbished and used by individuals and organizations throughout the local area. Items unusable will be deconstructed and recycled following strict guidelines to keep the materials from being dumped in landfills.
